Fiji

The Republic of Fiji is a Pacific island country located in the South Pacific, it is situated in the east of Vanuatu, west of Tonga and south of Tuvalu, and it consists of 332 islands, of which 106 are inhabited. Most of the islands are volcanic islands surrounded by coral reefs, mainly including Victoria Island and Vanu Island and so on. It has a tropical maritime climate and is often hit by hurricanes. The annual average temperature is 22 ~ 30 ℃.

The name of the country is derived from the "island" in Tonga and becomes the "Viti" in Fijian. Dutch sailor Tasman first came to Fiji in 1643. In the first half of the 19th century the Europeans began to move in. In 1874 it became a British colony. From 1879 to 1916, a large number of Indians came here to plant sugarcane as contract workers of British "colonial sugar company". It became independent on October 10, 1970 and became a member of the Commonwealth.

After the 1987 coup it was renamed as a Republic and broke away from the Commonwealth. In 1990, the new constitution got passed with the name of "Fiji Sovereign Democratic Republic". The constitutional amendment got passed and the country name was changed into "Republic of the Fiji Islands". In 2009 the country changed its name into "Republic of Fiji".
