The Republic of Greece, generally known as Greece, is a republic country located in the southeast corner of Europe and the southern tip of the Balkan Penninsula. The country consists the Peloponnese Peninsula located in the south and more than 3,000 islands in the Aegean Sea. Greece is a strategic location connecting Asia and Europe, is adjacent to Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria respectively from the northwest to the north, and borders with Turkey in the northeast. It is close to the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean region and the Ionian Sea from the east to the west.

The history of Greece can be traced back to ancient Greek civilization, which is often regarded as the cradle of Western civilization. Greece is also the birthplace of western philosophy, the Olympic Games, western literature, history, political science, democratic institutions, science, mathematical principles and western drama. Greece's cultural and technological progress had a great influence on world in the history through the spread of Alexander the Great and the Roman Empire to the East and the West. Contemporary Greek history usually begins with the establishment of the Greek Kingdom in 1830, when Greece prevailed over the Ottoman Empire in the War of Independence.

Greece is a founding member of the United Nations as well as a member of the EU and NATO. It is the largest economy in the Balkan area.

Greece is one of the weaker developed countries in the European Union, its economic foundation is relatively weak and its industrial manufacturing is backward. Its maritime industry is developed, and is tied up as one of the three pillars for the Greek foreign exchange earnings, together with tourism and overseas remittance. Its agriculture is relatively advanced and its industry mainly relies on food processing and light industry. In 2013, Greece's gross domestic product was 182.05 billion euros.
